"Mother And Child"
17" x 13"
Ink Drawing - Pen and Brush
The illustrational content of this drawing - (mother cradling her child in her arms) evokes such strong emotion that it can survive and shine through a formal statement of great sparsity. Maxwell achieves a partial annulment of strong emotion by distracting the viewer from the force of the fairly straightforward line drawing illustrating the "mother and child content". This distraction is achieved by a scattering of dark, contrasting shapes throughout the image.
